England’s World Cup hopes suffered a major set back on Saturday 29th April, when with just twelve minutes to go in the match between Premiership Champions Chelsea and Manchester United, England star Wayne Rooney fractured the base of his fourth metatarsal; an injury that has hampered players like David Beckham and Michael Owen.
Metatarsals are the five long bones in the forefoot which connect the ankle bones to those of the toes. With just a few weeks remaining until the world cup in Germany Wayne Rooney’s participation seems very unlikely.
England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson says he wants to include Rooney in his squad despite his broken foot, because he is so important to the team. It would seem that all of England were looking to this one man Wayne Rooney.
What are you depending on? Who are you trusting in? The word of God reminds us of many things we cannot depend upon or put our confidence in.
We cannot trust in weapons
Psalm 44:6 "For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me"
We cannot trust in riches.
Proverbs 11:28 "He that trusteth in his riches shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch"
We cannot depend on ourselves
Proverbs 28:26 "He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered"
Can we depend or have confidence in any man?
The scriptures speak of trusting in a man.
Proverbs 25:19 "Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint"
For the most important issues of life and death there is only one man we can trust in. Every born again Christian have placed all their confidence in one man, but he is not an “unfaithful man” or a man with a broken foot. The man that we trust in is the Lord Jesus Christ; one of his wonderful titles is “Faithful and True”.
The Lord Jesus was faithful when he went to Calvary and became a sacrifice for our sin, He was faithful when he rose from the dead victorious over death and the grave.
The Lord Jesus was faithful when he took away the sins of every person who ever repented and called upon his name. England may have their confidence in Rooney, some may have their confidence in religion and ritual, but every saved person has their confidence in the only Redeemer Jesus Christ the Lord. Where does your confidence for salvation and eternity lie?
