The disappearance of Lord Lucan on the 7th November 1974 started one of the most compelling mysteries in modern criminal history. The mystery and the glamour of the Lucan world have kept the story alive for these 30 past years, and probably will do for years to come.
The police were called to 46 Lower Belgrave Street, in one of London's more fashionable neighbourhoods. There, in the basement, they discovered the battered and lifeless body of a lady who was nanny to Lord Lucan's three children.
Suspected of murder, Lord Lucan went on the run. A massive police search failed to uncover him. So what happened to Lucan? Did he commit suicide? Or did he use his network of influential friends to help him establish a new identity abroad? It's a puzzle that remains unsolved to this day.
We may never know what happened to Lord Lucan.
Many people disappear each year but due to the crime and the nobility of those who were involved, this incident has always had an extremely high profile. The lives of the rich and famous are intriguing to us all.
I wonder how many of us can remember the name Sandra Rivett? She was the lady who was murdered allegedly by Lucan, she has been forgotten. She had no title or rank and was thus apparently deemed unimportant.
How different things are when it comes to our Lord and Saviour. In one incident in Luke’s gospel the Lord speaks about two people. One he called a rich man and doesn’t give us his name, the other is a beggar and we are told his name is Lazarus.
Why was the Lord so interested in the beggar’s name?
The beggar was a child of God; he died and went to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man however was not a Christian as you can see from the following verses.
Luke 16:22-23 "And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom"
As you read this article remember it’s not our name or nobility that is important rather it is what we have done with regard to His precious Name.
Romans 10:13 "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved"
